When they reach adulthood, female ferrets, also known as jills, enter oestrus, or heat, and remain in it until they mate. They might come out of heat with the aid of a vasectomized male. Alternatively, hormone injections must be administered to female ferrets in order to stop their heat cycle, as continued hormone exposure can result in anemia and even death.
